AHHS Announces Closed-Admission Policy

Effective November 1, 2007, the Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS) will become a closed-admission stray animal shelter. As such, AHHS will no longer take in owner-surrendered animals. Due to the limited financial resources as a private not-for-profit corporation, this decision has been made to secure the survival of the organization. The closed-admission policy also includes no longer taking in any animals from outside surrounding counties.

In fulfillment of the municipality contracts with the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, AHHS will continue to serve the stray animal population from those areas.

The financial and space limitations the organization faces simply does not give AHHS the ability to continue to take in both stray and owner-surrendered animals. Owner responsibility includes providing a lifetime commitment of love and care to their animals.

AHHS continues to take in more than 5,000 animals each year, and 45 percent of those animals have consistently been surrendered by an owner. In order for the organization to stay open and serve the municipalities as the contracts state, AHHS can no longer enable irresponsible behavior by pet owners.

The animal overpopulation problem is a community problem and as a community everyone has to take responsibility and action. AHHS will continue to provide educational information to any owner in need of pet-related assistance.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this transition.
