Thank You for Wanting to Lend a Helping Paw!

Almost Home’s volunteers are a vital part of our organization and help us in a variety of ways.  Volunteers help with everything from walking to dogs to planning events.  Whatever your talents or interests we are sure to have a volunteer position that is a good fit!

School/Group Projects or Community Service (not court ordered)

Almost Home is able to accomodate small number of groups each depending upon our needs at the time.  Groups of volunteers assist us with basic tasks such as cleaning/organizing projects and yard work.  Groups are not always able to directly interact with our pets because animal-handling volunteer positions require additional training.  We are unable to accept individuals needing to complete only a few hours of community service for school or classes.

Family Volunteers

Children 13-16 years of age are welcome to volunteer when accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Our family volunteers provide children with the opportunity to learn about Almost Home and provides our pets with the opportunity to interact with various ages of volunteers.  All youth volunteers must be accompanied by an adult at all times while in the building.

Individual Volunteers

Volunteer orientations are held once each month and RSVP is required. Orientation is your opportunity to learn more about Almost Home, what we do, why we do it, and how you can help.  Volunteer applications will be filled out after orientation has been completed and a volunteer fee of $15.00 will be due when you complete your hands on training.  After orientation you will receive training based upon the volunteer position you choose.  To RSVP for an orientation please contact Aggie at 765-474-5222 ext 312 or

*Please be aware that due to the popular nature of our program there is sometimes a 1-2 month wait to attend orientation but don't worry the wait (and the animals) are worth it!

Volunteer Positions

Kennel Assistant—Assist AHHS staff with preparing the shelter for visitors.  If you are available between the hours of 8:30 and 12:30, this is a great opportunity.  Kennel Assistants are a vital part of our organization and allow us to complete more cleaning projects than just basic daily tasks.

Socializer—Do you have free time during the afternoon hours?  Socializers help us walk our adoptable dogs, socialize puppies, and interact with our adoptable cats.  As a socializing volunteer you have the opportunity to help us learn more about our adoptable pet’s personalities and give them plenty of TLC.

Special Event Volunteer—Almost Home has many different events throughout the year.  We often need additional help at off-site adoption events, fundraisers, and awareness events.  Special event volunteers are used on an as needed basis.

Adoption Helper—One of AHHS’ most rewarding volunteer opportunities.  Assist visitors to Almost Home with selecting the perfect new fur-ever friend.  Guide visitors through the building, tell them more about our pets, and help them begin the adoption process.

Other Opportunities—Often other opportunities arise such as projects with short-term needs.

For more information about volunteering and how you can help the homeless pets of AHHS contact Aggie at 765-474-5222 or

Court-Ordered Community Service

Almost Home does accept court-ordered community service for some offenses.  To apply for this program individuals must be at least 18 years of age and be available between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  Contact for more information or stop by our facility to pick up an application.

  • In October 2012 I adopted a lab mix puppy named Mel and just want to send some pictures and let you all  know how she/s doing.

I renamed her Isabelle, Izzy for short, and she gets bigger everyday.  She is the definition of a lap dog and she loves to cuddle.  Within the first few weeks of having her she already learned to sit and shake!  Her first night with me she slept in her kennel the entire night without a peep.(shes the first dog I've had that has done that so i was very excited) We're now working on down, sit, and stay. She loves to rip apart her toys and to eat ice cubes! I am so please with how smart and happy she is.  Her tail is always wagging and she loves to give kisses.  I can't thank you enough for allowing me to adopt such a great dog!
