Who we are
The Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS) (formerly the Tippecanoe County Humane Society) was founded in 1939 by a group of local animal lovers in Tippecanoe County. Since its beginning more than 70 years ago, the organization has been dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our community.
We are not a government agency, are not affiliated with any national organization, and we are not a United Way Agency. We accept all stray animals in need, regardless of age, health or adoptability from the Lafayette and West Lafayette jurisdictions. As a local non-profit we exist through the generosity of our community.
Mission
We, the Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS), care deeply about the comfort and rights of animals and citizens within our area. As such, we strive to enhance the relationship between people and animals through education, to control the pet population through responsible advocacy, and to provide sanctuary for unwanted, lost, and neglected animals.
Vision
We aspire to be part of a community in which the supply and demand of pets would be balanced. One where our services would only be needed for education, adoptions, and recovery of lost animals, with limited euthanasia for infirm animals.
Funding
Funding for the Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS) comes from three sources: donations and fundraising; service revenue; and municipality contracts.
Donations and fundraising include donations by organizations and people like you. We have three main fundraising events per year: Strike Out Suffering Bowling Event, Tails N Trails 5K and Awareness Week. In 2012 we are adding a Fur Ball Gala (dinner/dance/ silent auction event) and a Dog Walk (Marching for Mutts!) to our events calendar. We also have a variety of other fundraising events throughout the year, including a Benefit Motorcycle Ride in the summer and our Annual Holiday Open House in December. We continually strive to add more events to our calendar.
Service revenue includes our adoption fees and any retail item sales.
Our funding from our municipality contracts is based on the services we provide to Lafayette and West Lafayette. Each jurisdiction must have some way to pick up stray animals and ensure that those animals receive care. Lafayette and West Lafayette contract with AHHS to provide these services and enforce local ordinances. The money received from these contracts, however does not include funding to rehabilitate and/or ready the animals for adoption. Contractual funds only cover the costs associated with maintaining the animals during a five-day holding period. The contracts are carried out at a loss to the humane society each year.
Non-profit Status
The Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, relief of suffering among animals and the extension of humane education, and we are governed by a volunteer board of directors.We are not funded by any governmental or national animal welfare organization.
